Raleigh Cawood Sutton, 22, of Charleston, South Carolina, died early Friday morning, August 19, 2016 while being treated at MUSC as the result of sudden
cardiac arrest. Family members were with him at the time of his death.
Born on February 24, 1994 in New York City, Raleigh was enrolled as a student at the College of Charleston where his major courses involved Historic
Preservation and Community Planning. He planned to attain his graduate degree in Architecture and become an expert in the restoration of historic or endangered architectural properties.
A resident of Charleston since 2012, Raleigh grew up in Gladstone, New Jersey, where he excelled in school and athletics and pursued his musical passions as a classical choral singer and popular DJ at parties. He was an avid lacrosse player and ardent conservationist, spending his last summer before college assisting in the restoration of New Jersey's Musconetcong River.
A member of the Rho class of the College's Pi Kappa Alpha fraternal order, Raleigh's passions included fly-fishing and aquarium ecology. He worked part time as an aquatic specialist at PetSmart in Mount Pleasant and enjoyed building tropical fish tanks for friends. Raleigh also enjoyed uploading and sharing his original musical compositions online.
To know Raleigh truly was to grasp his favorite quotation, a line from author Robert A. Heinlein: "A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects."
Raleigh leaves behind his grieving parents, Robert Edward Sutton, Jr and Ginger Kalker Sutton of Mount Pleasant, and his younger twin brothers at home, John M. "Jack" and Luke P. Sutton. In addition, he is survived by his paternal grandmother, Shirley Peeples Sutton of Lady's Island, Beaufort; his aunts, Katherine Kalker of Williamstown, MA and Leisa Sutton Cantrell (Greg) of Clovis, CA; his uncles, Daniel W. Sutton, Tampa FL, Michael B. Sutton (Nan) and Mark W. Sutton (Lisa), both of Beaufort, and Peter Kalker (Tammy) of Saratoga, NY. Raleigh will be missed by his many cousins, fraternity brothers, teammates, and friends, and especially by his dog, Browser.
A celebration of Raleigh's life will be held September 18, 2016 from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at the Charleston Yacht Club, 17 Lockwood Dr. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL.
