Known affectionately as the “Queen” to family and friends, R. Jane Seekings passed away begrudgingly yet peacefully on September 11, 2024, at the age of 91, after living a full and adventurous life. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Jane was born to travel, tell a story, and brighten every room with her smile-and she excelled at all three. Family was always at the center of her life.
Jane’s journey quite literally took flight early on. After graduating from Cathedral High School in New York City, she secured a coveted position as an international stewardess during the golden era of air travel with BOAC (now British Airways). Her work led her across the globe, and ultimately to her husband, Michael Richard Seekings, a Royal Air Force officer stationed in London with the Ministry of Defense.
Her marriage with Michael brought Jane her greatest joys, her two sons, Michael and John. The family lived an extraordinary life, moving between England, Scotland, Cyprus, and Washington, D.C. before eventually settling in New England. There, Jane pursued a successful career as a travel consultant and business owner. She thrived in bringing people together and particularly cherished preparing family holiday meals, especially Christmas gatherings at Mowsbury, their family home in Bedfordshire. At the table, her audience was often treated to lively tales of her travels.
In her later years, Jane divided her time between New York and Pittsburgh before eventually settling in Charleston, where she remained close to family and became a dedicated volunteer for numerous civic organizations. She was a vibrant figure around the Holy City, whether directing a lost visitor or attending Council meetings, her expressive demeanor always revealing her stance.
Throughout her life, family always came first. She shared a special bond with her sister, Ann, and was the beloved mother of Michael, his wife Michele, and John, and proud grandmother of Caroline, Christian, and Mick. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends from around the world, all of whom were touched by her indomitable spirit. In her 91 years of a life well-lived on a road less traveled, Jane Seekings made a profound difference to those around her. She leaves the world a better place, and those who knew her are all the better because she did.
Private celebrations of her life will be held in Charleston and New York, where she will be laid to rest at St. Charles Cemetery alongside her beloved sister.
In remembrance of Jane, those who wish to honor her memory are invited to make a donation in her name to the American Lung Association,1964 Ashley River Rd., Ste. B #80338, Charleston, SC 29416.
