R. Whitfield Scoggin

August 7, 1937 — February 1, 2013

Robert Whitfield (Whit) Scoggin (75 yrs old) of Mt Pleasant,SC, the former Secretary/Treasurer and retired executive of Banks Construction Company died at home February 1, 2013. A celebration of his life will be Tuesday, February 5th at 11am in the St. Andrews Ministry Center with burial at Christ Church cemetery. Reception in Christ Church Parish Hall following the burial. Visitation from 5-7pm on Monday, February 4th in the St. Andrews historic church. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Mount Pleasant Chapel.

Whit was born August 7, 1937 in Savannah, Georgia, a son of the late Albert and Virginia Scoggin. He graduated from Savannah High School, Armstrong Junior College, and the University of South Carolina with a BS degree in Accounting. He began his career at Banks Construction immediately upon graduation from the University of South Carolina working alongside his mentor Gary Banks, Sr. This also allowed him to work with his Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity big brother Gary Banks, Jr. and his best friend and college roommate Ronnie Banks every day for 35 years until he retired. He continued to serve on the board of Banks Construction until his death. During his career, he was an active member of the SC Asphalt Pavement Association and Associated General Contractors.

Whit also gave his time and financial talents to many educational boards such as the East Cooper School Board of Directors, the Bishop England High School Board of Directors, and the Columbia College Board of Visitors. He was a long standing member of the Hibernian Society, a charter member of the Mount Pleasant Cotillion and served as past President of the Mt. Pleasant Sertoma Club. He was also a former member of the Friends of Brookgreen Gardens in Murrells Inlet. Whit and his wife of 51 years, Sib, have been dedicated members of St. Andrews Church in Mt. Pleasant where he served on the vestry and finance committees. As seasonal residents of Saluda, NC, he and Sib attended The Church of the Transfiguration in Saluda.

Golf has been a passion of Whit's for many years, and he served as a former board member of the South Carolina Golf Association. In 1991, thanks to Charlie Way, Whit along with three of his golfing partners Judge Falcon Hawkins, Footsie Behling and Ronnie Banks were photographed for the Charleston Post and Courier making the inaugural putt on the Kiawah Ocean Course wearing proper golfing knickers. After being diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma in 2004, Whit became a vigilant supporter and board member of the SC chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. He traveled to Washington, DC to help lobby for cancer funding on their behalf.

Whit was known for his quick, dry humor, and philanthropic efforts. He was one of the first and longest running fans of the Weather Channel. Throughout his career and into retirement, he exhibited a strong work ethic and keen financial mind. He loved and was much loved by his "girls" and grandchildren. He was a loyal and trustworthy friend to many whose word was as good as any hand shake. He was always an early riser who walked faithfully daily with a group of men from the Old Village. He fought cancer for more than 8 years and wants everyone to know, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished and I have kept the faith."

Surviving are his wife, Priscilla (Sib) Robertson Scoggin; children Cissie Scoggin of Baltimore, MD, Neyle Thompson (Flynn Bowie) of Columbia, SC and Ellen Henderson (Thomas) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; grandchildren, Emily Robertson Thompson, Stuart Clarke Thompson Jr., and Thomas Gary Henderson, Jr. who lovingly called him "Wheet"; sister, Carol Falligant and her husband, Danny of Savannah, GA; nieces, Dana Davidson and Paige Sellers, both of Savannah, GA and loving cousin, Kay Trischman of Laguna Beach, CA.

The family wants to thank Dr. James Orcutt and staff, Dr. John Donaldson who have been the most wonderful caregivers and supporters during this battle as well as his caregivers from Home Care Plus and Amedisys Home Health, Palliative Care and Hospice who supported the family for many months emotionally and medically. The family is also grateful for the support of his many friends and prayer warriors.
