PO1 John Allen Shelton, Sr., US Navy Ret.,78, of Charleston, SC, husband of Wanda Shelton, died Tuesday, December 21, 2010, at Hospice of Charleston Hospice Center in Mt. Pleasant, SC.

Born January 15, 1932 in Madison County, KY he was one of six children of Henry Shelton and Sudie Kissick Shelton Hendricks.  Mr. Shelton's career in the U.S. Navy included two tours of duty in Vietnam, a tour in the Korean war and numerous commendations including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Navy occupation Medal and Good Conduct Medal (fourth award); he was a photographer and retired after 20 years of service.  A 20 year civil service career followed with Navy Publication and Printing.

Mr. Shelton is survived by his wife of 49 years, Wanda F. Shelton of Charleston, SC; daughter, Kimberly Patel and her husband Ketankumar of Charleston, SC; son, John A. Shelton, Jr. of Kingwood, TX; and brothers, Shirley Shelton of Lexington KY, Jesse Shelton and his wife Brenda of Jacksonville, FL, Charles Eugene Shelton of Lexington, KY and Raymond Shelton of FL; mother, Sudie Shelton Hendricks; sister, Lacrecia Nadine Callahan and her husband Robert of Lexington, KY; grandson, Timothy Allen Shelton and one on the way.  He was preceded in death by his father; step-father, Herbert Hendricks; and brother, Henry Shelton.

The funeral service, with military honors will be held in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., NORTHWOODS CHAPEL, 2180 Greenridge Road Thursday, December 23, 2010 at 5:00 PM.  The family will receive friends in Stuhr's Northwoods Chapel, one hour prior to the service.
