Phyllis Ann Watts Althen, 80, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 23rd, 2024. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 9th, 2024, at the J. Henry Stuhr Mount Pleasant Chapel on 1494 Mathis Ferry Road in Mount Pleasant at 10:00 am. Burial will follow in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens, 1308 Mathis Ferry Road in Mount Pleasant.
Phyllis was born on February 26th, 1944, in Tabor City, North Carolina, the youngest of eleven children of the late Albert Dow Watts and Edith Sole Watts. To Phyllis, family was everything and she loved her family with all of her heart. She also devoted her entire life to serving and helping others. As a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) for over 50 years, she treated others under her care with compassion, dignity and care as if they were her own family. She loved the beach, to paint, to read and animals of all kinds, especially horses and Jack Russel terriers. Her laugh was infectious as was her kindness and personality.
Phyllis was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother (aka Gaga), sister and friend. She is survived by her son, Howard David Althen (Sarah), her daughter, Sandra Althen Patrick (Dennis); and six grandchildren, Jackson Althen, William Althen, Paul-David Patrick, Eleanor Patrick, Brooks Bennett, and Cailyn Bennett. She is also survived by her sister, Doris Granger. She was preceded in death by her husband of almost 51 years, Gerald David Althen. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Bill Watts, Ted Watts, Dale Watts, Don Watts, Ned Watts, and Ronald Watts and by her sisters, Virginia Long, Betty June Ward, and Peggy Currie. Finally, Phyllis is survived by her many beloved nieces, nephews and even some great nieces and nephews.
