Phoebe Louann Clamp Elliott, 74, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest Wednesday, December 2, 2015. Her memorial service will be held Tuesday, December 22, 2015 in St. Andrews (Historic) Church, 440 Whilden Street at 11:00 a.m. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall. Arrangements by J. Phoebe was born September 27, 1941 in Rock Hill, South Carolina, daughter of the late Fulton Clamp and Mattie Lou Veal Clamp. Phoebe grew up in Ware Shoals, SC where her parents, who were renowned for their hospitality, owned the Red Top Motel and Restaurant. In 1959, she graduated from Ware Shoals High School where she played clarinet in their marching band and performed as an accomplished majorette known for twirling a fire baton handmade by her father. She was honored as Miss Junior and May Queen of 1959.
She attended the University of SC where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. During her freshman year she was crowned Miss Ware Shoals and represented her home town in the Miss South Carolina pageant. After college, Phoebe moved to Augusta, GA and was employed at the Medical College of Georgia in the anatomy department. In 1965 she earned board certification by the National Society for Histotechnology and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. She was honored by MCG School of Basic Sciences as its 1970 Employee of the Year. She was a member of the Augusta Junior Women's Club and historic St. Paul's Episcopal Church.At Emory University Hospital, Atlanta GA she worked in the Pathology Department and was named Chief of Histology. In 1983 she returned to Greenwood, SC where she served as Histology Department Supervisor at Self Memorial Hospital for 23 years. In Greenwood she was a faithful parishioner of The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection where she served on the Altar Guild. Phoebe retired from Self in 2006 and moved to Mount Pleasant to be near her children and grandchildren. She found an immediate home and new friends at historic St. Andrews Church in the Old Village. She enjoyed several bible study groups and was a member of the Daughters of The King.
Phoebe is survived by two daughters: Andrea Hilsman Glenn (T.J. Ryan, III) of Mount Pleasant and San Francisco and Vanessa Hilsman Feller (Mitchell) of Hawera, New Zealand; her son, Van Bowling Elliott, III (Henslee Evans) of Charleston; five grandchildren: Catherine C.C. Glenn Neal (Elliott) of Chapel Hill, NC; Douglas Tyree Tinsley Glenn, Rory Ferrell Glenn, both of San Francisco.and Phoebe Caroline Agardy, Mount Pleasant; special niece, Amy Simpfenderfer Carter and nephew, Alex Carter, both of Greenwood; special cousin, Kathy Veal Smith of Durham NC, and a very devoted forever son-in-law, E. Vernon F. Glenn of Charleston. She was predeceased by her sisters, Carrie Leigh Clamp and Rose Zanne Clamp Simpfenderfer.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to John Ikonomidis, MD, PhD, Chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina and nurse Paris Wiggins, RN along with the entire nursing and resident staff in the CICU whose kindness and compassionate care comforted our mother and family. A very special thanks to the canine member of the their team, Lucky, an amazingly intuitive and healing schnoodle, who works in the MUSC Therapy Dog program with his human and handler, Al Hoffman.
