Philip "Toli" Gadsden Hasell, Jr., 84, husband of Mathilda Elizabeth Siemon Hasell of Mt. Pleasant, SC passed away Wednesday, December 15, 2010. The relatives and friends of Philip Hasell, Jr. are invited to attend his Memorial Service in St. Johns Episcopal Church, 1151 Elm Savannah Road, Hopkins, SC 29061 on Saturday, December 18, 2010 at 4:00 pm. Inurnment will follow in the Churchyard. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL. Mr. Hasell was born on September 30, 1926 in Columbia, South Carolina. He was the son of the late Philip "Pap" Gadsden Hasell and Frances "Muddy" Douglass Hayne Hasell. He graduated from Dreher High School in Columbia, SC and then attended the University of South Carolina. He received an appointment to the US Naval Academy but by the time he received it he had joined the Navy V-12 Program. The Navy transferred him to Georgia Tech in the Aerospace Engineering Program. Toli graduated from Georgia Tech in 1946 at the age of 20 with a Bachelors Degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He was commissioned as an Ensign in the Navy and sent to the Naval Air Station Mojave, California to help develop and test missiles. Toli received his Master Degree in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech in 1950 and worked for North American's aerospace unit in Downey, California. Toli was sent to the test range at Hawes Airfield near Edwards Air Force Base where he measured the effect of radar patterns of an antenna at different heights. While working at Edwards he met his future wife, Mathilda Elizabeth Siemon and they were married in August of 1953. When North American moved to Florida, Toli found out that the University of Michigan Research Labs were hiring and the couple moved to Ann Arbor in 1955 and started his work in airborne infrared mapping (Thermal ground mapping). Gradually Toli was assigned more and more duties in support of technical operations and eventually became the Administrative Assistant to the Director of Technical Laboratories. Toli finally retired in 1991 to his beach house on the Isle of Palms in South Carolina where he was a frequent volunteer for the East Cooper Meals on Wheels and the Adult Literacy Program. Survivors include his loving wife of 57 years, Mathilda Hasell of Mt. Pleasant, SC; one daughter, Susan Frances Hasell of Atlanta, GA; three sons, Philip Hasell, III of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Douglass Morrison Hasell and his wife, Thuy, of Tampa, FL and Herbert Siemon Hasell and his wife, Ruth, of Atlanta, GA; one sister, Frances LaBorde of Columbia, SC and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Duncan Ingram Hasell and Adams Hayne Hasell.
