Philip A. Doherty III

Philip A. Doherty III, 86, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, passed away peacefully at his assisted living home on December 12, 2022.  His funeral service will be held Monday, December 19, 2022 in the St. Benedict Catholic Church, 950 Darrell Creek Trail at 11:00 am. The family will receive friends Sunday from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm in the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel.  His final resting place will be at the Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury, NY where he will be laid to rest beside his wife, parents and grandparents.

Phil was born August 20, 1936 in Brooklyn, NY., to Philip A. Doherty, Jr. and Genevieve Hogue.  He was married in 1961 to Rosemary Jacono Doherty of Cleveland Heights, OH who passed away in 2020.  He is survived by his son, Philip A. Doherty IV of Hayward, CA, daughter Kelley A. Doherty of Mt. Pleasant, SC, daughter-in-law Marcy A. Redick, former daughter-in-law Jane Doherty, and grandchildren Gwendolyn and Stuart Doherty and Avery Redick.

Phil was a proud graduate of John Carroll University (1958) and a veteran of the United States Marine Corps.  He was a devout Catholic who spent many hours each week in devotion or service at various parishes throughout his life.  But his greatest love and pride came from home life with family and beloved pets. Pre-retirement, after a long day at work in retail sales with Macy's and Byron's Shoes, he enjoyed a family-style meal and a bowl of ice cream. He could often be found in the evenings in his favorite chair with a newspaper in his hands and a cat nestled in his lap.  Post-retirement, he doted on his wife and stayed lovingly and faithfully by her side as she struggled through the stages of Alzheimer’s. In his final years, he was tended to by the amazing staff of Merrill Gardens Senior Living who had befriended and cared for him. There was a constant vigil of staff members checking on him and spending time with him as his health steadily declined.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org) or The Semper Fi and America’s Fund (thefund.org).
