Peter Stein, a resident of the Hidden Lakes development in Mt. Pleasant, SC since May 1994, passed away Sunday, June 27, 2010, due to complications from surgery. The relatives and friends of Peter Stein are invited to attend his Funeral Service to be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 30, 2010, in the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel. Burial will follow in Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens. ARRANGEMENTS BY J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening, June 29, 2010, from five until seven o'clock. Peter was born to the late Joe and Yetta Stein on September 26, 1926, in the Borough of Manhattan, New York City.
Peter entered the U.S. Army Air Corps on October 21, 1943 and honorably discharged from his military service on November 1, 1945. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Syracuse University and a Master of Public Administration degree from George Washington University. He completed advanced training in Management at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, the U.S. Navy Port Graduate School, the U.S. Army Management School, the Program for Senior Executives at the Federal Executive Institute and the American Management Association Program for Managers. Throughout his lifetime Mr. Stein was awarded many recognitions and earned many honors. In October 1945 he was awarded the Victory Medal. In 1974 Small Business Administrations SCORE Chapter 1 presented him with their Man of the Year Award. In each of the years from 1984 through 1993 Mr. Stein was conferred the Senior Executive Service Exceptional Service Award. He received the Department of the Army's Decoration for Meritorious Civilian Service, 1979 through 1981 while serving as Deputy Administrative Assistant, Coordinator for Headquarters Services -Washington, and Director Resource Management. On May 6, 1992, Mr. Stein was presented one of 24 Army-wide 1991 Presidential Meritorious Rank Awards on behalf of President George H.W. Bush. On May 1, 1994, after 34 years of civilian service he retired as the Deputy Administrative to the Secretary of the Army (ES-5).
An accomplished author, he had four published books to his credit as well as hundreds of articles on various aspects of management. He served as a member and officer of SCORE in New York, Virginia, and South Carolina. Peter was a truly unique person; had an incredible sense of humor, was full of stories and loved to entertain his family, friends and associates by sharing his wit at any opportunity. He will be missed, but he will never, ever be forgotten. He is survived by his beloved wife of 21 years Billie Sue (Susie); stepson, Mitchell T. Painter and wife Jennifer; and granddaughter, Emily Margaret of Mechanicsville, Virginia; stepdaughter, Kitty Painter and her fiance;, John Loveless of Fairfax, Virginia.
