Peter Bacot Read

PETER BACOT READ, 86, of Charleston, South Carolina, widower of Frances Evans Read entered into eternal rest Tuesday, December 31, 2024. His Funeral Service will be held Saturday, January 4, 2025 in the Chapel at Bishop Gadsden, 1 Bishop Gadsden Way at 11:00am. Burial will be private. A reception will be held immediately following the service. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc Downtown Chapel.

Peter was born May 14, 1938 in Charleston, son of the late Isaac Mayo Read and Posey Myers Read. He attended Episcopal High School and The University of South Carolina. Upon graduation he went to work in the banking business and continued until his retirement. He was a founding member of the Charleston Horticultural Society, active in the community and served on many nonprofit boards, including Charleston Library Society, Preservation Society of Charleston, Trident United Way, Charleston Speech and Hearing Clinic, and Charleston Day School. He was a past member of South Carolina Society, St. Cecilia Society, New England Society, Huguenot Society of South Carolina, Society of Colonial Wars. He was a life-long member of St Philip's Church where he served as Junior and Senior Warden.

King, the name given to him by his grandchildren and adopted by all, was never one to complain. He bravely faced life’s challenges with dignity, grace, humor and resilience. Modest and humble, King’s quiet steady presence was his greatest gift to his family and friends.

He is survived by son, Peter Bacot Read, Jr. (Laura) of Dallas, TX; two daughters: Frances Read Puckette (Trap) of Johns Island, SC and Margaret Read Mason (Todd) of Bozeman, MT; seven grandchildren: Julia Gervais Puckette, Cole Evans Read, Caroline Puckette Donaldson (Matt), Andrew Bacot Read (Claire), Elizabeth Darby Mason, Paul Trapier Gervais Puckette, Jr. and Natalie Margaret Mason; and brother-in-law, George C. Evans. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years and his brother, Isaac Mayo Read (Ellen).
