Peter Armour Lareau

July 10, 1937 — March 13, 2021

Peter Armour Lareau, 83, husband of Kate Compton Lareau, entered into eternal rest Saturday, March 13th, 2021. His Private Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, March 20th, 2021 at 11 a.m. in Grace Church Cathedral in downtown Charleston, South Carolina. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.

Peter was born July 10, 1937 in Fall River, Massachusetts, son of the late George Arthur Lareau and Katharine Bannister Lareau. He was a graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy, class of 1955, and subsequently graduated from Princeton University, class of 1959, with a bachelor's degree in medieval history. He then entered immediately into service in the United States Navy with a full commission and served two active duty tours, one in the Mediterranean and a second in the Caribbean. During his Caribbean cruise he was aboard the U.S.S. Bigelow for the entirety of the Cuban Missile Crisis and later was patrolling offshore during the Bay of Pigs Invasion while his destroyer picked up survivors swimming off the beach. After leaving active duty, he captained a minesweeper in the Naval Reserve before retiring his commission as a Lieutenant.

Peter then went on to pursue a career in finance as a Certified Financial Analyst and later as a Portfolio Manager. During his professional career he served as Director of Research at Chemical Bank in New York City, New York and later as Executive Vice President of Legg Mason in Baltimore, Maryland. In between these roles he also taught business at the University of Richmond and obtained a master's in theology from the University of the South.

Outside of his career, Peter was no stranger to charitable work. He made a monthly commitment of spending a weekend as an overnight volunteer at St. Bartholomew Church's homeless shelter in New York City and a habit of swimming in the church's swimming pool, wagering his distances in exchange for charitable donations.

After beginning a family, Peter settled in Mountain Lakes, New Jersey, commuted daily into New York City and began a second career in the media side of the finance community. After working as a consultant at Dow Jones, he then proceeded to consult for CNBC where he began developing content targeted by demographics rather than industry. After leaving CNBC, he proceeded to consult at Bloomberg News and simultaneously began a media company that specialized in the development of content and distribution of educational news in multiple fields for adolescents and teenagers. His work was eventually picked up and can be seen across numerous platforms including NBC Kids News, Blackboard and others.

He is survived by his wife, Kate Compton Lareau; two sons: Thomas Compton Lareau and Geoffrey Bannister Lareau and daughter, Margaret Anne Hurlbut Lareau.

Memorials may be made to St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, 325 Park Avenue, New York, New York, 10022 for Peter Armour Lareau Memorial Fund for Media and Outreach.
