John “Peter” Grant entered into eternal rest Wednesday, June 11, 2025. A small graveside service will be held and at a later date there will be a celebration of his life.
Peter was born in Durban, South Africa and grew up in suburban Cape Town, South Africa. He came to the United States for college, and graduated from Yale University with a major in physics. Rather than going immediately to graduate school, he went to New York City and worked for IBM as a systems engineer.
He and Livingston met in Manhattan, and were married in 1966. They moved to Boston where Peter began his MBA at Harvard. Upon graduation, he entered the investment industry, spending most of his career at Putnam Funds. He served in many capacities, starting as a financial analyst following several industries, managing mutual funds, later specializing in international investments and serving as Chief Economist, founded an Emerging Equity Markets department and retired in 2002. Peter loved spending time with Livingston, his children, and grandchildren, tennis, golf, investing, and world economics. A lifelong learner, Peter was always studying, most recently current research in physics.
Peter is survived by his loving wife Livingston with whom he shared more than 58 years of marriage. Peter is also survived by his three sons: Thomas and his children Jackie, Luke, Jake, and Jamie; Michael (Tania) and his children Rodger, Roland, Dagny, and Victor; Charles (Maria) and his children Tim, Etta, John, and David.
