Peter Lynn Bower, 76, of Daniel Island, South Carolina, husband of Elizabeth Maury Bower, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, May 13, 2025. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday May 29, 2025, at St. Clare of Assisi Catholic Church, located at 990 Etiwan Park Street, Daniel Island, South Carolina at 10 a.m. Family will receive friends following the service at Daniel Island Club, 600 Island Park Drive. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel. A Celebration of Life will also be held in Washington, D.C. at a later date.
Born on November 22, 1948, in Kankakee, Illinois, Peter was the beloved son of the late Lynn Bower and the late Mildred Cavender. As a talented athlete, he played baseball at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he also earned a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy from the Gies College of Business. He remained an avid Illinois sports fan for the rest of his life. Shortly after graduating, Peter answered the call to serve his country, joining the United States Army where he proudly achieved the title of Sharpshooter and held a long-standing marksman record.
After being honorably discharged, Peter devoted his professional life to public accounting in Chicago, IL, earning his CPA designation and building a distinguished career marked by excellence and integrity. He became a partner at Grant Thornton and later served as Chief Financial Officer for several firms and institutions across the country, where his leadership and financial expertise earned him deep respect.
Peter lived a rich and meaningful life across three distinct chapters. He grew up in Illinois, where he formed the foundation of his character and began his career while raising his two daughters in Chicago. The next chapter brought him to Chevy Chase, Maryland, where he was a cherished part of the Maury family, built his professional legacy and continued raising his family, now joined by two sons. Peter enjoyed coaching athletics, refereeing hockey, and playing golf with friends at Chevy Chase Club. In retirement, he settled in Charleston, South Carolina, where he embraced a joyful life filled with golf and afternoons with friends on the porch enjoying Woodford Reserve bourbon and a cigar, alongside his faithful Boxer dog, Harper.
Peter is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth Maury Bower, sister Stephanie Ping (Robert), children Jennifer Bower McDonough, Lisa Bower, Douglas (Sarah), Christopher (Erin), grandchildren Drake and Sydney Williams, Megan and Rachel Zabawa, Nicholas and Elyse Bower, and Charles, Brendan and Madeline Bower. He also leaves many close cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Peter will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His kindness, wry sense of humor, and supportive nature left a lasting impact on those around him. His legacy lives on in the hearts of the many people he loved and inspired.
