Penelope Jen Morton Gibbs (“Jenny”), 86, widow of William Jenkins Gibbs (“Jenks”), entered into eternal rest on June 15, 2026. Her graveside funeral service will take place on Friday, June 19, 2026, at 10 am in St. Philip’s Churchyard, 142 Church Street. A visitation will be held on Thursday, June 18, 2026, from 4 until 6 pm, at South Bay at Mt. Pleasant, 400 Liberty Midtown Drive.
Born on January 6, 1940, Jenny was the daughter of Paul Colhoun Morton, M.D., and Tess Walton Morton. Raised in Englewood, New Jersey, she attended the Barstow School in Kansas City, Missouri, and Hollins College in Virginia.
Jenny, in her quiet, efficient, and supportive way, gave her many talents as a volunteer to the Junior League of Charleston, the Lowcountry Garden Club and the Charleston Horticultural Society, among others. She later discovered a gift for painting and found great joy in taking art classes and sharing her masterpieces with family and close friends.
Recently, Jenny took a special trip with her daughters to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where her family lived from 1942 to 1945. This was followed by a last-minute adventure to Paris with her granddaughters. She cherished a close bond with her only grandson, whose company brought her and Jenks much happiness during his years in Charleston.
Jenny is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth Tess Gibbs Craddock (Clay) and Dorothy Lee Gibbs Depret-Bixio (Christian); her grandchildren, William Gibbs Craddock, Cecilia Morton Depret-Bixio Hyndman (Justin), Anne Claiborne Craddock, and Emma Lee Depret-Bixio; her great-granddaughter, Madeleine Jenkins Hyndman; several nieces and nephews; and members of the Montague family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her sisters, Sue Morton Overton and Jill Morton Prior.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Charleston Horticultural Society, 46 Windermere Blvd., Charleston, SC, 29407.
