Pearl "Jo" Snell Spivey

Jo, retired teacher, librarian and widow of Jake P. Spivey entered into eternal rest Thursday, July 27, 2023. The family will receive former students and friends Tuesday, August 8th at 10:00 am for visitation followed by the service at 11:00 am at the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. West Ashley Chapel. Interment will follow at the Carolina Memorial Park, 7113 Rivers Avenue at 12:00 pm.

Jo was born March 19, 1926 in Charlotte, North Carolina, daughter of the late Paul Shelton Snell and the late Bell Lane Snell. She graduated from Flora MacDonald College, Red Springs, NC and received her masters at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC. She was a teacher and later a librarian, teaching in NC, SC, and two years with American Dependent schools in Ansbach, Germany. This allowed her to travel many places, her favorite being the trip to the Holy Land. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, MU Chapter, honorary teachers sorority. Also she was an active member of Ashley River Baptist Church for many years.

She is survived by four daughters, Laura Ellen Burn (Robert, Jr.), Elizabeth Ann Odom (Laverne), Gloria Jean Brooks (Ron), and Helen Marie Putnam (Rex); eight grandchildren, Kristin Swiler, Robbie Burn, Rhett Burn, Danielle Butler, Roger Brock, Jr., Perry Brock, Katelyn Michener, and Rex Putnam, III; as well as eleven great grandchildren; two great great grand children; many nieces and nephews; and one cousin, Doug Michael. She was preceded in death by her brother, Paul Snell. Thanks to her caregivers, especially Lindsey Davis Foster and Detra Brown that always helped fill her days with joy.
