Pearl James Hill

Pearl James Hill, 93, a resident of North Charleston, went to be with her Lord, March 18, 2018 after a long illness. Her relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation on Sunday, March 25, from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM at Cherokee Placed United Methodist Church at 2105 Cosgrove Avenue, North Charleston, SC. The service celebrating her life will immediately follow at 3:00 PM also at Cherokee Place United Methodist Church. Interment will be at Carolina Memorial Park. Arrangements are by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Northwoods Chapel.

Mrs. Hill was born March 11, 1925 in Conway, South Carolina the daughter of the late Rev. Edwin P. James and Maggie Brooks James. She had been a member of Cherokee Place United Methodist Church since 1946. She loved her Lord and her Church family and served her Church in many capacities such as: Sunday School Teacher, Administrative Council, and as financial secretary until her passing.

After leaving her farm home in Aynor, SC, her work career began in 1943 at the Charleston Ammunition Depot were she assembled hand grenades. After completing welding school she continued her career at Charleston Naval Shipyard as a welder until after World War ll ended. In 2005 she became an honorary Rosy the Riveter honored by the crew of the USS Tidewater for her support of the war effort in her work. After staying home with her son during childhood she began her next career with the Charleston County School District. She graduated from Trident Technical College as a Registered Dietician and worked her entire food service career of 28 years at Ben Tillman/Ronald McNair Elementary School, retiring as the Food Service Manager. This was the perfect job for her as she loved children, cooking, and feeding people. In retirement Pearl stayed fit by walking every day, gardening, square dancing, and caring for her yard and grandchildren. She placed 2nd in the North Charleston 10K running with her Granddaughter and participated in the Senior Olympics until last year. She presently holds the South Carolina State Senior Olympics record for the discus throw in the 90 - 94 age group. She also enjoyed traveling, and sewing, but she especially loved being with and doing things with her family and friends. She was a member of the Belles and Beaus Square Dance club for over 25 years and served as treasurer. She was also an a member of the South Carolina PTA in which she was awarded a lifetime membership.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Walter H. Hill; sisters, Lorene Corley, Josie Godbolt, Bessie Mathis, Victoria Richardson; and brothers Buddy Cooper, Edvin James and Oliver James.She is survived by her son James Ronny Hill (Debby), granddaughters Lisa Rae Hill and Jamee Allene Hill; brothers Pat Cooper (Nancy) of Lagrange, GA and Ronald Cooper (Elizabeth) of Conway, SC and many nephews and nieces. The family would like to thank Dr. Chip Linton, Dr. Gretchen Meyer, Dr. Walton Moseley, Dr. Bright McConnell and their staffs, as well as nurses Tiffany Stanfield and Tiffany Redders, for all the care, kindness, gentleness, and genuine concern they gave over the last four years to give Mrs. Pearl the best quality of life she could have. She loved all of you.
