Entered into eternal rest on the evening of September 19, 2013, Pauline Califf Martschink, widow of Frederick John Martschink, Jr., Residence, Charleston, SC. The relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral service in St. John's Lutheran Church, Monday, September 23, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Interment following the service in Bethany Cemetery. The family will receive friends in Blackmer Hall at Bishop Gadsden on Sunday between 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL.
Polly was born on April 24, 1923 in North Charleston, South Carolina. The eldest daughter of William Langdon Califf and Pauline Eliza Hunter Califf. She was a graduate of North Charleston High School, attended Winthrop College and the University of South Carolina, where she was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority. After her marriage in 1948, she worked with Sue Tarpley Sanders Interior Design and as a registered City of Charleston tour guide, conducting numerous tours over some 30 years. A longtime friend and supporter of the City of Charleston, she was a volunteer in numerous activities from politics to historical tours. Mrs. Martschink was a member of the Arion Society's Ladies Auxiliary and the Ladies Benevolent Society. She was an active and devoted member of St. John's Lutheran Church with the Lee-Freyschmidt Circle, the Altar Guild and a life member of the Ladies Sewing Society. Polly's interest over the many years included, the beach, boating, traveling and a love of painting. For those who knew her, she will always be remembered for her outgoing personality, warm smile and a love for dancing.
She is survived by her two sons, Fred John Martschink, III (Linda) of Charleston, SC and Miles Hunter Martschink (Elizabeth) of Mount Pleasant, SC; two sisters, Ruth Califf Coyle of Charleston, SC and Mary Lena Califf Harper (Andrew) of Mobile, AL; four grandchildren, Meredith M. Belk (Michael), Pauline (Peg) M. McDowell (Christopher), Sarah M. Moore (Will) and Miles Hunter Martschink, Jr.; three great-grandchildren, Addison, Carsten and Virginia and numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her sister, Virginia Califf Murray.
The family would also like to extend their gratitude and deepest appreciation to her Bishop Gadsden Caregivers over the past years for their love, dedication and devotion.
