Paul Nelson "Bobby" Hughes, 80, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Marie Messervy Hughes entered into eternal rest Friday, January 25, 2013. The family will receive friends Monday, January 28, 2013 in J.HENRY STUHR, INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway from 5:00 until 7:00 pm where an evening Prayer Service will be held at 7:00 pm.
Bobby was born June 17, 1932 in Columbia, South Carolina, son of Howard Fishburne Hughes and Murray Belle Nelson Hughes. Bobby was an Eagle Scout and a founding BSA member of the Order of the Arrow. He was a standout high school athlete at Chicora High School and attended USC on a track scholarship. Bobby played on numerous softball state championship teams and played semiprofessional football for the North Charleston Rebels. He worked as a Salvage Diver for the City of Charleston, Charleston County and devoted years as a Scuba instructor at the YMCA. Bobby retired as the Director of Procurement for the Charleston County Government.
Bobby is survived by his wife of 60 years; daughter, Linda H. McGuffin (Stan) of Blythewood, SC; two sons, Paul Nelson Hughes, Jr. (Penny) of Spartanburg SC and Ronald Murray Hughes (Teresa) of Charleston SC; brother, Richard Herndon " Billy" Hughes (Carolyn Iris) of Charleston SC; five grandchildren, Welles McGuffin Bricker (Jeremy), Jade Marie Hughes, Ronald Murray Hughes Jr., Bradford Alexander McGuffin, Paul Nelson Hughes III and one great-granddaughter, Maggie Rae Moore Bricker; brother-in-law, Lawrence Welling Messervy (Virginia), and several nieces and nephews. Bobby was predeceased by a brother Howard F. "Buddy" Hughes.
