Paul David Hopton, 62, of Charleston, South Carolina, passed away on Monday, April 29, 2024. Born December 13,1961 in Jackson, Mississippi, Paul David was the son of the late Richard Hopton and Carol Fagen Hopton. Paul David was preceded in death by his older brother, Ricky, who passed away in April 2020. Known as PD by his friends and family, Paul David grew up in a loving home in Jackson, Mississippi, where, at an early age, he began working at his father’s plastering construction business. Paul David was artistically talented and began drawing house plans before the age of 10. He loved construction and later carried on his father’s legacy along with his older brother, Ricky, by working in the family business. Paul David eventually moved away from Jackson, some 30+ years ago, to carve out his own path. He spent time in Florida, and in Hilton Head, SC. Paul David eventually joined Satchel Construction LLC, a Commercial General Contractor /Construction Management Company in South Carolina with offices in Charleston and Greeneville.
Satchel Construction clients always knew the “A Team” had arrived when PD was on their job site. His co-workers knew him as the man with the master plan. To them, PD was a superhero who walked around like an everyday man. Paul David was always happy to jump in and help anyone, anywhere, anytime… no matter how difficult a task it was. “This man had knowledge beyond what most people will ever learn and a passion for this trade that I have never experienced. You just can’t ask for a better man.”
Once told that he was “one in a million”, Paul David’s humble response was “so is a mosquito”. That tells you all you need to know about Paul David’s sense of humor and the respect he had earned within his circles of influence. His big heart and kind soul clearly impacted his co-workers and his life-long contributions to the construction industry are beyond measure. His expertise and huge heart will surely be missed.
While Paul David never attended college because of his early entrance into the construction industry, he was always a huge Mississippi State fan. You could always count on PD ringing his cowbells and rooting for his maroon and white football team on an autumn afternoon. His loyalty never wavered. PD also was known as a bit of a prankster and many of his friends will gladly share a few stories that will make you laugh.
Paul is survived by his wife of 32 years, Paula Tumbleston Hopton, his two daughters, Holly (TJ) Hopton of Charleston, SC., and Ashley Hopton of Charleston; and his son Mark (Sadie) Sumersett of Charleston, SC. Paul David enjoyed spending time with his five grandchildren: Kylie, Chloe, Christian, Brinley, and Austin. He loved his two sisters, Teresa (Jim) Acker, and Linda Cumberland; and his many nieces and nephews: Carrie, Gil, Chelsea, Jennifer, Louie, James, Tristan, Shannon, and Fallon. His family will forever cherish his memory. Please keep PD’s family in their thoughts and prayers. Services are scheduled for Tuesday, May 7th at 3:00pm at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Mount Pleasant Chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road at 3:00 pm. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service.
