Mr. Paul Hagan "Bud" Moore died at his home in Hollywood, South Carolina on August 1, 2017. Bud is survived by his wife, Ida Elizabeth Hutchinson Moore and daughter, Sherry Moore Graves, both of Charleston, South Carolina. He is preceded in death by his father, Elmer Moore of Tipprell, Tennessee and mother, Virginia Victoria Money Moore of Big Stone Gap, Virginia. He was born on December 7, 1940 in Charleston, South Carolina. He met his wife Ida at Rivers High School where both would graduate in 1958.
Bud was an accomplished stock car driver and entrepreneur. His NASCAR career in the Sportsman and Grand National Divisions spanned from 1957-1973. He drove for such legendary car owners as Bondy Long (Camden, SC), Ronnie Hopkins (Greenville, SC) and Marion Cox (Hemingway, SC). Some of the notable highlights from his career include: winning the 1962 Georgia State Championship in NASCAR Limited Sportsman Division; winning the 1964 Columbia (SC) Speedway Championship; finishing 3rd in 1964 NASCAR National Sportsman Division and his 2012 induction into the Augusta (GA) International Raceway Hall of Fame. He was honored to induct legendary driver Ralph Earnhardt into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame at the request of his family. Ralph was a mentor for Bud since the early days of his racing career.
When he retired from driving, he led his family's mechanical contracting business, H.E. Moore Company, for many years. At that time, he concentrated primarily on commercial work across the state of South Carolina. He returned to auto racing as a sports merchandising entrepreneur/agent representing many well-known drivers such as: Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt Sr, Bill Elliot, Mark Martin,.Tim Richmond, and Harry Gant among others. Bud was a trailblazer in revolutionizing merchandise design and promotion for drivers and Charlotte Motor Speedway. He was instrumental in creating and promoting the merchandise for the 1992 Richard Petty Fan Appreciation Tour and the "7&7" campaign for Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt. He still owned the cabin in Harrisburg, NC where the campaigns were headquartered and enjoyed spending time there with family and friends.
Upon retirement, Bud maintained his involvement in vintage and collector cars. He was delighted to win trophies occasionally at Bessinger's car show in Charleston. He was involved in local car clubs. Bud never met a stranger and had a diverse group of friends from across the country. In addition, he loved live music and was an avid concert goer. Bud was a Christian and attended Calvary Baptist Church in Meggett, SC.
He passed away in his home overlooking the river, with his wife, daughter and their beloved dogs and cats at his bedside. He wanted to continue the fight against ALS. TEAM BUD will participate again in the 2017 Lowcountry Walk to Defeat ALS in Charleston on November 4th.
