Patrick Michael Woster, Ph.D.

Patrick Michael Woster, Ph.D., 68, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Carin Jorgensen, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, July 15, 2023. The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 20, 2023 in the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. West Ashley Chapel from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.  His funeral service will be held Friday, July 21, 2023 in the West Ashley Chapel beginning at 10:00 a.m. 

Patrick was born January 5, 1955 in Omaha, Nebraska, son of Ernest Woster and the late Darlene Myers Woster. He attended high school at Creighton Preparatory School and graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center with a Doctor of Philosophy in Pharmaceutical Sciences and engaged in post doctoral studies at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the University of Michigan. He taught and conducted research for more than 20 years at Wayne State University before moving to South Carolina where he became the SmartState Endowed Chair in Drug Discovery and chair of the Department of Drug Discovery and Biomedical Sciences, Distinguished University Professor and Vincent T. Peng, M.D. Endowed Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the Medical University of South Carolina. He was a dedicated and beloved teacher, as well as a gifted researcher and collaborator. Patrick held a number of patents on compounds that had the potential to treat some disorders including cancer.

Patrick had a deep love of family, friends, music, animals, traveling and the outdoors particularly the beach. He was a talented guitarist and loved to comb the beach for shark teeth that he often found by the dozens.

In addition to his wife and father, Patrick is survived by his sons, Matthew Woster (Lauren Fletcher), granddaughter Nova Fletcher-Woster, Mark Woster (Marina), grandson Logan Woster; sisters, Colleen Ross (Dave), Connie Honsinger, Wendy Waugh, nieces and nephews, Jamie Janovec (Ross), Nick Krahn, Sam Ross, Jeffrey Honsinger (Macy), Rachael Honsinger, Kaci Waugh, and Kellie Waugh, Caitlin Jorgensen, Nicole Jorgensen, and Ashley Jorgensen. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John (Doc) and Alice Myers, and Matthew and Beulah Woster; mother, Darlene Myers, and nephews Trevor and Travis Waugh.

Later in life Patrick had the opportunity to meet his half-sisters Claudette Austin-Talley, AnnMarie Medina, Judith Ann Sterner, and Corinne Hollingsworth.

Interment will take place during a family-only service at Magnolia Cemetery.
