Patricia Dunleavy Maher, 70, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, died Friday, April 20, 2018. A Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday, April 24, 2018 from 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm with prayer and reflection at 6:00 pm at Cooper River Room at Waterfront Park, Mt Pleasant. There will be a gathering on Block Island, RI announced at a later date. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL.
Patricia was born March 20, 1948 in Akron, Ohio, daughter of the late George H. Dunleavy and the late Regina Doyle Dunleavy. In Patti's formative years she excelled academically, as a member of the National Honor Society and socially as head cheerleader in high school. She began her restaurant career in her home town of West Haven, Connecticut. In the early 1990's she took a leap of faith, moved to Mount Pleasant, and partnered with her brother Bill Dunleavy to open Dunleavy's Pub on Sullivan's Island.
Though Patti was a successful restaurateur, her passion in life was for her children, grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She had so much genuine interest in the lives of young people around her, and was known as "Aunt Patti" to many. Patti was an avid gardener, sports enthusiast, and lover of sand and oceans. Her spirit will be with us all when we walk the beaches of Sullivan's Island, Block Island, and the paths along the Cooper River at Mount Pleasant's Waterfront Park.
She is survived by her loving children, James J. Maher, Jr., and Jennifer Johnson (Brad); her six close-knit siblings: Bill Dunleavy, Glenn Dunleavy (Sally), Suzan Dunleavy (Timothy Berge), George Dunleavy, Thomas Dunleavy (Maureen), Brian Dunleavy (Keely); and the lights of her life, her five grandchildren: Caitlin, Pete, Maeve, Brendan and Laurel; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister-in-law, Cecelia Dunleavy.
Memorials may be made to MUSC Children's Hospital Fund, 59 Bee Street, MSC 201, Charleston, SC 29425.
