Pamela Marie MacNevin Deal

Pamela Marie MacNevin Deal, 81, lost her valiant battle with dementia Monday night, August 3-4, 2020. She passed away peacefully in her sleep at National Health Care (NHC) in Charleston.
Pam was born on November 13th, 1938 in Brockton, Massachusetts to Ina Victoria Rosequist and Norris Irving MacNevin. Some of her earliest memories were of playing with friends in the piles of scrap leather at the shoe factories that dominated Brockton at that time. With her mother, she moved seasonally between Brockton and Buzzards Bay. She shared many stories of sailing in the Bay and racing horseshoe crabs on the beach. She attended and graduated high school in Chatham on Cape Cod. During her school years, she also lived briefly with siblings in Alexandria, Virginia and Beaufort, South Carolina. After graduation, she moved to Portsmouth, Virginia where she met Arthur Kevill Deal. They married in Elizabeth City, North Carolina on April 6, 1957. After their wedding, they lived in Portsmouth where their two daughters, Pamela Susan and Cheryl Kay, were born.
The family moved, pulling a horse trailer, to Louisville, Kentucky in 1965 where Pam grew as an equestrian, led Girl Scout and 4-H programs, and developed after-school programs. In Louisville she developed a life-long love of antiques and horse racing. In 1969 the family moved to New Bern, North Carolina, after spending three months in Morehead City. First owning an antique store then later running the River Bend Riding Academy, Pam continued to work with youth groups, especially 4-H. She was a charter member of the North Carolina Horse Council.
In 1973 the family moved to Okinawa, Japan. Pam threw herself into volunteer work with the Navy Relief Society where she served as the social welfare coordinator. She taught English language to Japanese high school students and still found time to train in ikebana (Japanese flower arranging), Chinese cuisine, and to take college courses at the University of Maryland. She spent most weekends exploring the coral reefs and beaches of Okinawa and neighboring islands. Pam had the opportunity to travel to Taiwan, Hong Kong, India, Kashmir, Tibet, and Thailand.
In 1977 the family returned to North Carolina, living in Jacksonville. Pam planned weddings for both her daughters and eventually moved to Beaufort in Carteret County in 1983. While in Beaufort, she was a docent for and active in the Beaufort Historical Association, worked as a veterinary assistant, and an environmental educator for both the Rachel Carson Reserve and the North Carolina Maritime Museum while also continuing a small antiques business. She graduated from Carteret Community College with an Associates degree in photography, pursuing her art through the Carteret County Arts and Crafts Coalition. She developed a love for coastal birds, pursuing that love on the Outer Banks and in Australia.
Several years after the death of her husband Art, she moved to Raleigh, North Carolina, then eventually to Charleston, South Carolina. She loved the cultural and natural history of the Lowcountry and enjoyed the arts community of Charleston. Pam also had the opportunity to travel to France, Italy, South Africa, and Costa Rica. She loved to travel.
Pam is survived by her two daughters and their spouses: Pamela Susan Deal Lovelace and Greg of Charleston, and Cheryl Kay Deal Cargill and John of Raleigh; and four grandchildren: Sara Lovelace of Charleston, Maya Lovelace of Portland, Oregon, Ian Cargill and Kevill Cargill, both of Raleigh.
