Ozer (Oz) Akra

July 3, 1932 — May 31, 2017

Mr. Ozer Akra (Oz) , entered peacefully into eternal rest on May 31, 2017. He was born in Istanbul, Turkey on July 3, 1932. He is survived by his son, Dirk Akra (Marianne) and special friends Ronald and Beverly Miedema. Oz was a truly unique man. He was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. He was the sweetest, friendliest and most courteous man you could ever meet. He loved people and they loved him. He worked for Lufthansa German Airlines as a Flight Dispatcher in Germany and later in New York from 1961 until his retirement in 1991. He was a voracious reader during his retirement years as the employees of the Mount Pleasant Library will attest. He also used his talents volunteering at the library and participating in book discussions. He volunteered at Meals on Wheels for a number of years. He always wanted to help others in any way he could. He was a self-taught, award winning artist. He gave many of his paintings to friends who he knew would appreciate them. His most precious paintings were of his two dogs Tori and Gigha. He was an animal lover. He often carried dog treats with him as he was taking his daily walks just in case he encountered a neighbor's furry friend. He was fluent in three languages: Turkish, German and English. He learned the English language by watching western movies and television shows. He achieved a lifetime dream of traveling out west to see the old western towns. He visited the White Stallion Ranch in Tucson where was able to live like a cowboy for a week each year. It was there that he met and adopted his horse Roper. When he returned to South Carolina he made a painting of Roper which now is proudly displayed at the White Stallion Ranch. The friends of Ozer are invited to a drop-in "Celebration of the Life of Ozer Akra"on Sunday June 25th from 11:00AM - 1:00PM at Belle Hall Apartments Clubhouse located at 1600 Belle Pointe Drive in Mt.
