Oscar Johnson Small

O. Johnson Small passed away June 15, 2013. Johnson was born April 6, 1920 in Charleston, SC, son of Robert Scott Small and Louise Johnson Small.

A 1941graduate of the College of Charleston, he served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. Upon his return to Charleston, he became a certified public accountant. Johnny loved his family, his college, Charleston, and his Scots heritage. He served as the College Foundation's treasurer and was a member of the Board of Trustees. Johnny was a past president of the United Way of Charleston and the Carolina Art Association and was a founder and served as a member and chairman of the Charleston Area Comprehensive Health Planning Agency's board of directors. He served on the South Carolina National Bank Advisory Board. He was also active in other community programs such as the Speech and Hearing Clinic, Spoleto Festival USA, the Girl Scout Plantation Foundation, and Friends of Snee Farm. He loved history and served on the board of directors of the South Carolina Historical Society from 1970 to 1985, including two years as president, four as vice president and three as treasurer. He was a past commodore of the Carolina Yacht Club and member of the St. George's Society, the Plantation Society, and the Charleston Club.

As an avid outdoorsman, he practiced forestry and hunted at his beloved Midway Plantation. He also enjoyed fly fishing, bird hunting, and sailing worldwide.

He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy Mahony Small, and his two brothers, Robert Scott Small and James Hampden Small. He is survived by his sister, Charlotte Small Bavier; his two daughters, Dorothy Hefner (Frank) and Louise Griffen (Penn); and three grandchildren, Will and Weezie Hefner and Gray Griffen.

His funeral services will be conducted at the graveside in Magnolia Cemetery Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at 2:30 p.m. The family will receive friends following the services at 25 Meeting Street. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC, DOWNTOWN CHAPEL.
