Oscar Alan Gentry III, 83, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of Joyce Escontres Gentry, died Saturday, June 3, 2017. His Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, June 6, 2017 in the J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road at 3:00 p.m.
Alan was born May 18, 1934 in Eastman, Georgia, son of the late Oscar Alan Gentry, Jr. and the late Mary Porter Gentry Finley. Alan attended Georgia Military Academy and graduated from Fulton High School in Knoxville, Tennessee. He earned his Bachelor's Degree from Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina and a Master's Degree from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He was retired from the South Carolina Department of Corrections and was also a swim coach at the University of Georgia from 1968-1970 and at the University of South Carolina from 1971-1977.
Alan was a champion swimmer, holding many medals including American record in butterfly, Southeastern Champion 100m, and 200m backstroke. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame of Swimming in Knoxville, Tennessee. He was consistently active, and regularly participated in Triathlons, as well as riding his bike from California to Florida at 63 years of age, along with many other bicycling events across Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Iowa.
While already educated at the Master's level, Alan took classes at College of Charleston to develop his skills as an artist, another endeavor at which he became so talented. Yet, without question, his favorite way to spend time was with Joyce, his family, and his dogs. He is a man of honor, a man of his word, and a caring father to his many children, grandchildren, and multiple friends (and pups).
In addition to his wife of 32 years, Joyce, he is survived by his children, Clark Gentry, Lisa Postec (husband, Yves), Randy Black (wife, Lee), Melissa Black (Michael Gilbert); his beloved grandchildren, Jackson, Cody, Taylor, Shelby, Patrick, Hannah, Luc, and Phillipe; his brother Charles Gentry (wife, Elizabeth); his sister, Nancy Mannon (husband, George); nieces and nephews; and two loyal Scottie companions, Gus and Perley.
He was predeceased by two sons, Michael Alan Gentry and Richard E. Black III.
