Oren Douglas Boyce, Jr., 79, died at his home Monday, October 31, 2016. Funeral arrangements are pending.
Douglas was born December 9, 1936 in Rural Retreat, Virginia to the late Oren Douglas Boyce, Sr. and the late Virginia Wilkes Boyce. After high school in Gastonia, North Carolina Douglas attended Mars Hill Junior College for two years and then enlisted as a seaman in the US Navy for radar and navigation and was stationed on the USS Boxer. Aboard this vessel he went through the Panama canal and visited ports in California, Hawaii, and the Marshall Islands. A memorable occasion "the greatest show on earth" was seeing 20 hydrogen bombs tested in the atmosphere, two underwater blasts, and one 10,000 feet high.
Following his Navy service, he returned to North Carolina and studied architecture at the North Carolina State University School of Design. He lived for three years in Denver, Colorado and then moved to Charleston, South Carolina in 1973 where he practiced architecture.Douglas enjoyed sailing and boat racing, playing tennis, and slowly restoring his white convertible 1985 Mustang GT. He was a Canon photography master 5 star and a member of the American Institute of Architects, the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, and the Charleston Exchange Club.
He is survived by his sister, Margaret Boyce (Jack) Baily of Leland, NC; two brothers, James Lewis (Nelle) Boyce of Jacksonville, NC, Robert Wilkes (Star) Boyce of Wrightsville Beach, NC; his nephew, Samuel Douglas (Kim) Boyce of Wilmington, NC; nieces, Susan Boyce (Matt) Puckett of Lugano, Switzerland, Kathryn Boyce (Jonathon) Hamilton of Cornelius, NC, Andrea Boyce (Chad) Martin of Charlotte, NC, and Emily Boyce (Ben) Massey of Charlotte, NC; and several grand nieces and nephews.
