Opal Shirley Jay

Opal Shirley Jay, 82, of North Charleston, SC, entered eternal rest on Monday, the 17th of May 2021. She was a born again Christian and knew Jesus as her Lord and Savior, which gives her family and friends great comfort knowing she is present with the Lord today!

The funeral service will take place on Saturday May 22, 2021 at Wando Woods Baptist Church, North Charleston, at 1:00 pm. Interment will follow at Riverview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Friday, May 21st from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the J. Henry Stuhr Inc., West Ashley Chapel, 3660 Glenn McConnell Pkwy.

Opal was born October 29, 1938 in Luverne, Alabama, daughter of John Kelly Shirley and Nancy Elizabeth Messick. She moved to Charleston at the age of 18 where she met Bobby, her husband of 49 years. She was a loving mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend to many. She retired from the SC Federal Credit Union where she worked for 47 years. During her time there, she worked as a Loan Officer, Loan Department Supervisor, Branch Manager and Vice President of Sales Finance. She was a lifetime member of the Order of The Eastern Star and a current member of Charleston Chapter 56. She was a Past Matron, Past District Deputy, and State Finance Chair. She was also member of First Baptist Church of North Charleston and a Charter member of Wando Woods Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph (Bobby) R. Jay; her sister, Mary Perry; her brother, Johnny Shirley; and her sister, Brenda Odom. Surviving are 2 sons, Robert A. Jay of North Charleston, and John M. Jay and his wife Deborah of North, SC; 2 grandchildren, John D. Jay and his wife Heather of North, SC, and Kristen M. Jay of Leesville, SC; 2 great grandchildren, Audrey N. Jay and John L. Jay of North, SC; and many nieces and nephews.
