Oliver Hart Jenkins

September 27, 1923 — July 14, 2011

Oliver Hart Jenkins entered into eternal rest on July 14, 2011.  Know as "Midge" by his family and friends, he was loved by everyone who knew him.


Midge was the son of Charles Walter Jenkins and Laura Seabrook Jenkins born in Charleston, SC on September 27, 1923.  He graduated from the High School of Charleston and attended The University of the South (Sewanee) and then Clemson where in 1944 he and his company went on to fight in World War II.  A decorated veteran, he graduated from The Citadel and went on to become head chemist and plant manager of Gulf Oil Corporation.


Next to his love for his family was his love of sports.  He was a lifelong athlete and avid sports fan.  He played baseball at The Citadel, refereed throughout the Low Country, and coached generations of youths in the Charleston area.


He was very active in his church, St. James Episcopal, where he coached the men's softball team for many years and also served on the Vestry.  He was a Mason and also a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, the James Island Dance Club, the Sea Island Yacht Club, the Brigadier Club and Clemson IPTAY.


He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Lois Metze Jenkins; his daughter, Laura Jenkins Thompson and husband, Joe; his son, Dr. Mark Guerry Jenkins and his wife, Kathy; and three grandchildren, Dr. Joseph Jenkins Thompson, Anne Elizabeth Jenkins and Andrew Guerry Jenkins.


The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Hart Jenkins are invited to attend the funeral service of the former Monday, July 18, 2011 at 11:00am in St. James Episcopal Church.  Interment, churchyard.  Friends may call at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Downtown Chapel Sunday between 5-7pm.
