Ogburn Lenear Jay, Jr. "Jay," 89, of James Island, South Carolina, husband of Edith Mae Griffiths Jay passed away on Friday, February 27, 2015. His Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, March 3, 2015 in the Cherokee Place United Methodist Church, 2105 Cosgrove Avenue. Interment will follow in Live Oak Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Monday, March 2, 2015 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm in J. HENRY STUHR, INC. NORTH AREA CHAPEL, 2119 Dorchester Road.
Jay was born July 20, 1925 in North Charleston, South Carolina, son of the late Ogburn Lenear Jay, Sr.and Helen Gladden Jay. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in the Seabees. Jay was always active in his community, especially in coaching, umpiring, and refereeing children's sports. He was a member of the Citadel Athletic Department and was very involved with the Charleston County Rescue Squad. At one point, he was the president of the Squad and was their chief fundraiser. After retiring from the Charleston Naval Shipyard, he volunteered at the James Island County Park, which later employed him.
He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Edith Mae Griffiths Jay of James Island, SC; his children, Sherry Hall of Cottageville, SC, Gail Hawkins of James Island, SC, Janice Mixon of Round O, SC, Richard Jay of James Island, SC, Jon Jay of Woodbine, GA, and James Jay of Charleston, SC; his sisters, Joyce Brinkley of North Charleston, SC, Lillian Walters of North Charleston, SC, and Betty Hamilton of Goose Creek, SC; and his sister-in-law, Opal Jay of North Charleston, SC. Jay is also survived by his beloved seventeen grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren.
