Norman Edward Shiff, DDS

February 16, 1922 — January 17, 2017

Norman "Norm" Edward Shiff, DDS, 94, of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, passed away peacefully Tuesday, January 17, 2017. Born February 16, 1922, in Columbus, Ohio to Harry and Anna Shiff, he lived most of his life in Columbus, Ohio and North Fort Myers, Florida. He and his wife, Rosella, moved to Mount Pleasant, South Carolina to be near to their daughter and caregiver, Janet Kennedy.

A kind and gentle soul, Norm was beloved by family, friends and acquaintances alike. No one was a stranger. He was known for his playful sense of humor, his zeal and his integrity. He loved a good story, a good joke, a good pipe and when grilling outdoors, a good cigar. He was always up for a road trip, and would drive for hours to partake of gastronomic favorites.

Norm met the love of his life, Rosella Rose, in high school. Married for 72 years, they exchanged vows in a simple ceremony in June 1944. He served in the US Army Air Corps, stationed in Long Beach, California. A lifelong Buckeye, he graduated from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry in 1946. During his 40-plus years of practice, his caring nature and respect for humankind endeared him to his patients and staff. A 32nd degree Mason, he was active in the Aladdin Shrine of Columbus, his community and his synagogue Temple Israel.

Norm was an avid sports fan. His true passion was tennis, singles and doubles, which he enjoyed well into his 80s. He was a finesse player, able to place the ball anywhere and everywhere on the court with seeming effortless ease. He was a generous player, but a fierce competitor. He also liked to golf, bowl, dance and play cards.

Norm's greatest joy and source of happiness was his family. Seldom without a camera, he chronicled vacations, celebrations and occasions on 8mm film, slides, Polaroids and prints. He was a devoted son and husband, loving father and proud grandfather. Preceded in death by his brother Morton, an infant daughter and an infant son, he is survived by his wife Rosella; his children Deborah (Michael) Kuhr of Jacksonville, FL and Janet Kennedy of Mt. Pleasant, SC; his grandchildren, Joshua (Allison Jacobs) Kuhr of New Haven, CT, Karie (Andrew Landgraf) Kennedy of Upper Arlington, OH, Jonathan (Stephanie Scibilia) Kuhr of Brooklyn, NY, Emily Kennedy of Lexington, KY and Zachary Kuhr of San Marcos, TX; his brother-in-law Ralph Rose; and many adoring nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will take place 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 22, at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1494 Mathis Ferry Rd. Rabbi Greg Kanter will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Transitions Hospice, 405 N. Magnolia St., Summerville, SC 29483.
