Dr. Nils Glick "Bob" Wallen

Dr. Nils Glick “Bob” Wallen passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on November 4, 2026. A graveside service will be held Sunday, November 8, 2026 at KKBE Cemetery Huguenin Ave, Charleston at 10:30 am. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr Funeral Home, Inc. Downtown Chapel.

Bobby was a New Years baby, born on January 1, 1936 in Wildwood, New Jersey. He spent his childhood on the boardwalk at the beach, also playing running back behind the blocking of his offensive guard older brother Marven before matriculating at Syracuse University. His father, US Army Captain Doctor Benjamin Brian Wallen, was a first generation immigrant and a self-made general practioner physician who was elected to the Hall of Fame in New Jersey. He was widely known for accepting barter such as livestock, chickens, eggs, ducks and all kinds of produce during the Great Depression in exchange for delivering babies and everything else that he treated. He passed away after returning from a military campaign in Northern Africa when Bobby was 16. After graduation from Syracuse University, Bobby completed dental school at the University of Maryland. While there, he met the love of his life, Susi Willner, who was earning an MFA at Goucher College. After completing general surgery and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery fellowships at University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and in Manhattan, they moved to Setauket, NY where Bobby became the first practicing oral surgeon in Suffolk County, Long Island. While starting their family, Dr. Bob established a robust solo practice in multiple locations in Setauket, Rocky Point and Shirley and served on staff at Mather Hospital and as Chief of Staff at St. Charles hospital. He was a long-term professor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook Dental School.

Bobby embraced his community, including the North Shore Jewish Center, Three Village Tennis Club, Brookhaven Beach Association, Three Village Soccer Club and The Arts and Music Programs at SUNY Stony Brook, among others. He enthusiastically cheered and coached his boys in many sports, and he enjoyed the Yankees, Mets, Knicks, Nets, Giants, Jets, Cosmos, Arrows, Islanders and horseracing.

After retiring, Bob and Susi spent summers in Beckett, Massachusetts, enjoying Tanglewood’s summer concert series, kayaking, fishing, and spending time with family and friends. Nearly 20 years ago, they moved to Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, where they found a welcoming community of retirees, friends and KKBE community. He was the consummate foodie who luxuriated in a foodie’s city. Bob was an avid member of the Charleston Cougars Club and regularly attended games. Bob joined the Town of Mount Pleasant Citizens’ Police Academy and volunteered regularly as a docent with Spirit Lines Fort Sumter Tours. He spent many hours on the water in Charleston Harbor sharing stories of the Revolutionary War with hundreds of Lowcountry visitors.

Bob is cherished by many as a son, a brother, a husband, a father, an uncle, a grandfather, a father-in-law, a great friend, a mentor and a colleague. He is preceded in death by his parents Benjamin and Goldye Wallen, his wife Susi, and he is survived by his brother Marven, by his sons Benjamin and his wife Dorothy, Eric and his wife Stacey, Matthew and his wife Mitzi, and by his grandchildren Irene, Lindsey, Alex, Asher, Teddy, and Noa, and countless other loving family and cousins, extended family members and friends. Few will forget his hearty laugh, his sense of humor and his love of life and all of its joys.
