MCPO Newton Lindy Sims, USN (Ret.), 84, of Johns Island, SC, widower of Geneva Henrietta Guilford Sims, went to be with Christ Sunday, October 21, 2012. A Funeral Service will be held in West Ashley Independent Baptist Church Wednesday, October 24, 2012, at 1:00 p.m. Interment, Live Oak Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Pkwy.
Master Chief Sims was born April 24, 1928 in Brooklyn, New York, a son of the late William Lee Sims and the late Alma Warren Sharpe. He was a retired Master Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy and also retired from the Charleston Naval Shipyard. He attended West Ashley Independent Baptist Church.
He is survived by his son, Rev. Thomas L. Sims (Marilyn) of Charleston; his daughter, Brenda Sims Clay (Douglas) of Johns Island; five sisters, Beulah DeLoach of Tybee Island, GA, Frances Bramhall, Shirley Williams, Mrytle Powell and Ginger Cobb, all of Florence, SC; two brothers, Bing Sharpe and Autry Sharpe, both of Florence, SC; five grandchildren, Thomas L. Sims, Jr., Kathryn S. Pringle, Ethan K. Sims, Arlene G. Hodges and Christopher A. Clay; and seven great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Newton Lindy Sims, Jr.
