Nell was born July 29, 1930 in Cordesville, SC, a daughter of the late James Perry Benton and Gladys Bowers Benton. Nell grew up knowing the meaning of sacrifice and hard work. Once married to Henry, the love of her life, they formed a partnership that could not be broken no matter how difficult life was. Together, they built a home on John's Island, started a business where she was a partner and bookkeeper, and raised a family. Their home was always the hub of activity for all family members, no matter from which side they hailed. Their extended families knew that they were always welcome, and every niece or nephew were treated as if they were her own children, providing love and support in every form imaginable. Even when visits were intended to be brief, Nell would soon be serving them a slice of her famous coconut pie to entice them to stay just a little longer.
Aside from family, travel was what Nell and her beloved Henry most enjoyed. In the many motor homes that they owned over the years, Nell and "her Henry" traveled far and wide, from coast to coast of this great nation. She and Henry often shared their love of the road with their extended family and friends, and have passed the tradition down to their grandsons. We now take comfort in the knowledge that she has been reunited with her beloved Henry and that they are on the road once again, headed for their next great adventure. Safe travels, "Aunt Nell"...we all love you and will cherish the memories we all made together.
Nell is survived by her son, Grey Hanahan (Anne) Minshew; her grandchildren, Grey Becker (Anna) Minshew and Evan Fripp (Aubrey) Minshew; her sister, Evelyn B. Schafer; her brother, Perry L. Benton; her nieces, Patricia Benton, Helen Thomas, Michelle Shank, and Sharon Helps; her nephews, Rodney Benton, and James Snow, along with numerous other nieces and nephews. Nell also leaves behind a long-awaited great-granddaughter, Eloise Adeline Minshew (due in October).
In addition to Henry, her beloved husband of 60 years, Nell was predeceased by her brother, James Dean Benton, and her sister, Mell Benton Snow. Special thanks to all the loving care given to Nell in her final weeks by her nieces Pat, Sharon, Helen, and especially, Michelle, who has been devoted to her "Nellie" not just in the her final weeks, but for the last several years, providing supplemental love, support and attention even during the ongoing pandemic. Additional thanks go to the staff and administration at the Summerville Community Hospice House for the unwavering kindness that they provided to Nell while in their care.
