The Lord called home into eternal rest an incredible woman, early in the morning of February 15, 2012. Nelda Carolena McGee Corbin, wife of William L. Corbin of Pleasant, SC. The relatives and friends of Nelda Corbin are invited to attend her Memorial Service on Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 2:00 PM at the First Baptist Church of Mt. Pleasant, 681 McCants Drive. Interment will follow in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL. The family will receive friends at the Mount Pleasant Chapel on Friday, February 17, 2012 from 5:00 until 7:00 pm.
Mrs. Corbin was born on 11 February 1931 in McGee, Missouri the daughter of Daniel Blair McGee and Esther James McGee. She was predeceased by two sisters, Jewel McGee, Sybil McGee Hopkins of So. Roxanna, Ill. A brother, Willard A. McGee of Lowndes, Mo. and a son, Daniel Amos Corbin. She was a graduate of Greenville High School, Greenville, Missouri, and class of 1948. While working in St. Louis, Mo. She met her husband of 57 years and was married in Toledo, Ohio on June 6 1954, who was serving in the US Air Force at the time. Two weeks after the marriage her husband Bill was shipped overseas to England, where she joined him ninety days later. Living in England for three years, she became the religious educational director for Royal Air Force Base, Fairford, Glouster. After returning to the US, she worked for the Farmers Insurance Group in Merced, California. Two sons, William Thomas Corbin and Daniel Amos Corbin were born at Castle Air Force Base, Merced California. While there she was instrumental in establishing a new Southern Baptist Church in Merced, where her husband Bill served as a Deacon. The family then moved to Loring Air Force Base, Limestone Maine where she worked as a buyer for the base exchange and continued in assisting in the building of two churches, one in Caribou, Maine and another in Presque Isle, Maine. The family moved again to McGuire Air Force Base in Wrightstown New Jersey. A Daughter, Tanya Kay Corbin Meetze was born in the Walston Army Hospital, Fort Dix, New Jersey on February 28, 1965. All this time she continued to work assisting in the establishment of church work in Trenton, Wrightstown, Levittown, new Jersey and one in Bethlehem, Pa. In 1966 the family moved to Charleston Air Force Base, SC, joining with the First Baptist Church of North Charleston where her husband served as a Deacon. During this time she helped to establish a literacy program at the McDougal Correction al Facility. During this time she also worked as a Red Cross Volunteer at the Charleston Naval Hospital as a Dental Assistant. In 1969 the family moved to Alton, Ill. While living in Alton, she worked again as a Red Cross Volunteer in the blood donor program at a local hospital and organized Cub Scout Pack. In 1971 the family returned to Charleston Air Force Base and settled at the present address in Mt. Pleasant where she served as the volunteer librarian and school nurse at the First Baptist Church School of Mt.; Pleasant, now known as the Coastal Christian Preparatory School of Mt.; Pleasant. Nelda was employed by the MUSC of Charleston, SC, in the student registration and admissions program, retiring in 1996. She was very active in her church work, The Order of the Eastern Star, and Daughters of the Nile.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years William L. Corbin, a son, William Thomas Corbin who works at MUSC, a daughter, Tanya Kay Corbin Meetze, Son-In-Law Jimmy Meetze, a grandson Corbin James Meetze and a granddaughter, Carolena Grace Meetze, all of Mt. Pleasant and a nephew Stanley Hopkins of Missouri.
