Neil McCaskill, Jr., retired Charleston waterfront executive, died on July 14, 2010 at 1:07 am. Mr. McCaskill was born on September 3, 1926, in Marlboro County, South Carolina, and was the son of Neil McCaskill, Sr., and Jennie Belle Gillis McCaskill. He attended Latta High School and the University of South Carolina. During World War II, he served in the Air Arm of the United States Navy.
Mr. McCaskill's career on the waterfront covered a span of some 40 years during which time he was associated with Carolina Shipping Company and Coastal Forwarders, Inc., serving as president and CEO of the latter until his retirement in 1990. Mr. McCaskill was a member of the Charleston Propeller Club serving on its Executive Committee. He was named by that group as the South Carolina World Trade Man of the Year in 1975. He was a member of the South Carolina Regional Export Expansion Council and served as its chairman for many years. He was also a long time member of the South Carolina District Export Council. During this time, he ardently promoted the export of United States products. He also served as chairman of the South Carolina International Trade Conference. He was a Distinguished Life Member of the President's Club at Southwestern Baptist Theological n Fort Worth, Texas, a Gamecock Club member for many years, and a member of the Cum Laude Club of the Fellows of the Foundation of the University of South Carolina Educational Foundation. He was an active member of Ashley River Baptist Church for over 50 years where he served in many leadership positions including serving as a Sunday School teacher and a deacon. He loved music and was a member of the Adult and Senior Adult choirs.
Mr. McCaskill is survived by his wife of over 57 years Joyce Patrick McCaskill; two sons, Glen Alan McCaskill of Charleston, and the Reverend Kenneth Patrick McCaskill and his wife Susan of Walterboro, South Carolina; one daughter Cynthia Gail McCaskill DuPuis and her husband Audie of Myrtle Beach; four granddaughters: Kacie Dawn DuPuis of Greenville, South Carolina, Katherine Joy DuPuis of Columbia, South Carolina, Morgan Elaine McCaskill and Macie Elizabeth McCaskill both of Walterboro, South Carolina, and one grandson Andrew Patrick McCaskill, also of Walterboro. Mr. McCaskill is also survived by one brother Edwin McCaskill and his wife Margaret, of Pascagoula, Mississippi, and two sisters Nannie McCaskill Porter of Columbia, South Carolina, and Carolyn McCaskill Butler and her husband Doug of Wake Forest, North Carolina; and was loved by many nieces and nephews. Mr. McCaskill was also predeceased by a sister Macie Elizabeth McCaskill Humbert Canady, and a brother Edgar Eugene McCaskill.
Visitation will be at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL this Thursday afternoon from five until seven o'clock with funeral services to be held on Friday afternoon, July 16, 2010 at two o'clock at Ashley River Baptist Church in Charleston. Burial will immediately follow in Live Oak Memorial Gardens.
