Ahn In Nim was born 37 years ago in Dongdoochun City, Kyonggi-do, Korea, on November 4, 1984. While little is known about his time there, he did become part of a South Korean adoption service at 4 years old. He traveled to Detroit, Michigan, in April of 1989, with a group of other children, to ultimately become the loving son of Ira Steven Glass and Karen Gleason Glass. At that time, adoption agencies urged parents of foreign-born children settling in the U.S. to rename their child to make for an easier transition into American life. Ahn In Nim became Nathin Nim Glass - Nathin, Hebrew for “Gift of God” and In Nim, Korean for “Full of Kind Heart”. His renaming was appropriate. He exuded joy throughout his life and was loved by everyone that met him.
From the beginning of his arrival at his new home, Nathin exhibited traits of being a free thinker, eating pizza for dinner and settling down in front of the TV with his new dog pals, Sarah and Sasha Glass. He learned to swim, joined a karate class (achieving first degree black belt), was a prolific Lego builder, read and watched endlessly editions of Anime, and helped his grandfather prepare breakfast for blood donators at the family synagogue. Eventually, Nathin took his interest in cooking to the culinary arts program at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School and upon graduation, entered the Navy as a candidate for its culinary art program. He worked many years as a chef with Bennigan’s, Toojay’s, and restaurants of the Dardin Corporation,
Six years ago, Nathin was offered an opportunity to switch careers to marine construction, working as foreman for Mitchell Marine Construction in Charleston, South Carolina. It was in this position that Nathin really came into his own strengths as a leader and motivator. He loved the outdoors and the process of building. He felt grateful for the chance to stretch his creative side and had great respect and love for his employer and co-workers.
