N. Elliott Barnwell died on April 14, 2022. The family will have a private memorial service, and will receive guests between 5-7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 22, at 701 Arcadian Way. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr Inc., West Ashley Chapel.

Mr. Barnwell was born September 19, 1946, in Charleston, South Carolina, the son of the late Nathaniel Longstreet Barnwell and Anna Parker Barnwell. He was a graduate of Episcopal High School, the University of Virginia, and the University of South Carolina School of Law. Mr. Barnwell practiced law in Charleston for over 50 years, beginning at Barnwell, Whaley, Patterson, and Helms; then at the Charleston County Public Defender's; and finally at N.E Barnwell, Attorney at Law.

Mr. Barnwell truly enjoyed the practice of law and diligently working to serve his clients. He was an honest and loyal friend, and his quiet demeanor belied his readiness to share a clever comment or limerick he had written or heard.

Mr. Barnwell is survived by his son, John Russell Barnwell (Sarah VanWye); two grandsons, John "Jack" Benjamin Barnwell and George Russell Barnwell of Takoma Park, MD; and his brothers, Francis LeJau Parker Barnwell and John Parker Barnwell. He was predeceased by his wife and partner of 50 years, Nancy Thompson Barnwell, his son, Thompson Parker Barnwell, and a brother, Middleton Stuart Barnwell.

Memorials may be sent to the Halsey Gallery, 161 Calhoun St, Charleston, SC 29424, or to a charity of one’s choice.
