Nathan C. Schaeffer, 92, of Charleston, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest Tuesday, January 27, 2015. His Funeral Service will be held graveside Thursday, January 29, 2015 in Brith Sholom Beth Israel Cemetery, Sycamore Avenue, at 11:00 a.m. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Downtown Chapel.
Nathan was born October 27, 1922 in New York City, son of Sam Schaeffer and Sadie Hoffman Schaeffer. He served as a staff sergeant in World War II and was Commander of the Southern Regional branch of the Jewish War Veterans. He was also honored both nationally in Washington, DC, and regionally in Columbia, SC, for his role as one of the liberators of the concentration camps in World War II. He was the retired owner of the South Windermere Bakery and was a former member of Brith Sholom Beth Israel Synagogue.
He is survived by his daughters, Marilyn Arsham (Ron) of Mahopac, NY and Michele Cline (Hal) of Baltimore, MD; his son, Dr. Jack L. Schaeffer of Birmingham, AL; 10 grandchildren: Brooke Kaplan (Justin), Mark Schaeffer, David Schaeffer, Bryan Arsham, Ephraim Cline, Arnon Cline, Sarit Cline, Yehuda Cline, Shmuel Cline, Eliezer Cline; 3 great-grandchildren: Edith Kaplan, Maddie Kaplan, and Sam Kaplan; his brother, Ralph Schaeffer (Daisy) of Stamford, CT; and his sister, Ida Fisher of Charleston, SC.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lee Kirschner Schaeffer.
