Nathan William Garfinkle, 93, of Charleston, South Carolina, devoted husband of the late Frances Solomon Garfinkle, entered into eternal rest Wednesday, February 25, 2015. His Funeral Service will be held graveside Sunday, March 1, 2015 in Brith Sholom Beth Israel Cemetery "Maryville," Sycamore Avenue, at 10:30 a.m. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Downtown Chapel.
Nathan was born June 9, 1921 in Brooklyn, New York (and soon after moved to Charleston), son of Sam and Annie Garfinkel. He was a graduate of the High School of Charleston and Clemson University, Class of 1942. He served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific during WWII and attained the rank of Lt. Colonel. Nathan owned the Charleston Mattress Company and then the Garfinkle Agency. He was an active member in both secular and Jewish organizations. Nathan was an active member of Brith Sholom Beth Israel Synagogue. He will be remembered for his good nature, his pride in Charleston, his appreciation for the NC mountains, and his abundant love for his family.
He is survived and will be sorely missed by his children, Alan H. Gordon (Lauren) of Houston, TX, M. Jerry Garfinkle (Susan) of Charleston, SC, Bruce H. Garfinkle (Lois) of Houston, TX, and Jaine G. Nelson (Bill) of Saluda, NC; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; his sister, Sandra G. Shapiro of Portland, OR; his sister-in-law, Marian Sloan (Paul) and his brother-in-law, Israel Solomon (the late Inge).
The family extends a grateful thanks to his caregivers, Lucille Beaufort, Temeka Holt, Ruthie Bryan, Juanita Chandler and Janet Gillard. Also special grateful thanks to Drs. Thompson, Donaldson, and Grossman for ongoing care and to Roper Hospice for end-of-life care.
