Nancy Bass Wuerfel, 81, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, wife of Theodore Hans Wuerfel passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, November 14, 2014. Her memorial service will be held Saturday, November 22, 2014 at 2:00 pm in the J. HENRY STUHR, INC. MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL.
Nancy was born September 23, 1933 in Front Royal, Virginia, daughter of the late Charles Bass and the late Linden Brezler Bass. A 1956 graduate of the University of Virginia School of Nursing, she served for many years as a registered nurse and community volunteer. She and Hans made their home in locations from Rhode Island to Hawaii, as they moved with Hans' Navy career. Nancy's volunteer service included Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the Suicide and Crisis Center, being named Volunteer of the Year in Hawaii. She was a gifted writer, most notably the author of "How to Cope with a Problem Drinker," a comprehensive guide to dealing with an alcoholic family member.
Nancy is survived by her husband of 58 years; her sons, William Allen Wuerfel of Kailua, HI, Thomas Carl Wuerfel of Summerville, SC, and Stephen Fritz Wuerfel of Kaneohe, HI; her sister, Lin Buell; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Charles Bass and Sam Bass, and sister Eleanor Lashley.
