Nancy S. Smith

God just took another angel home. Born during WWII in Norwich, CT. Nancy, age 79, grew up in Gastonia, NC and attended Winthrop College. She married Norman "Punch" Smith in 1964 and lived in such places as Quantico, Camp LeJeune and Parris Island during their Marine Corps years, then Philadelphia, St. Louis, Chicago, Shrewsbury, MA and Shelby, NC before settling on Sullivan's Island in 1983, then downsizing to Mount Pleasant in 2008. They renovated an old mountain farmhouse in Saluda, NC, starting in 1990. Just four hours away, it is ideal for quick weekend getaways, a refuge during hurricanes and enjoying family and friends.

Nancy raised three daughters, Jennifer Barickman (who passed in 2022), Kelly Moneyhun, and Erin Caldwell, who all live nearby in Mount Pleasant where here six grandchildren were raised.

Nancy faithfully, unequivocally and thoroughly loved her family and friends. Nothing describes her better than a simple poem her husband, Punch, penned for her 55th birthday.

She's chatty, considerate, insightful and bright

Intriguing, approachable and invariably right!

Steady, sweet and supportive; she's clearly first class

But, candid and firm, she will climb your ass!

The grands call her honey, this grandmother in black.

She raised three lovely daughters; she's got "The Knack"

As a hostess unequaled, she brings parties alive

Tough to imagine this angel has hit fifty-five?

Sneakers and sweats, hanging out in the yard,

No pretensions this gal, she loves her NASCAR

Charming and helpful, so dear to her friends

Her partner, "Punch" hopes this trip never ends

She's caring and nice, and lives the "Golden Rule"

We thank God for blessing us all with this Jewel.

She enjoyed tennis, bridge, gardening, a cold beer, socializing, country music, and tending to her grandchildren (and great-grands) who loved their "Honey" passionately. Punch's job perks often took them to neat places like Maui, New Orleans, Ireland, Nashville, Nassau and San Francisco, but she was happiest in her yard and gardens on Sullivan's Island, the Old Village, and Saluda, especially surrounded by family.

Her funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 24, 2024 in the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Rd at 4:30 pm. The family will receive friends at 3:00 pm before the service. Guests are encouraged to dress in summer weekend casual attire. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Mount Pleasant Chapel.
