Nancy Walton Pringle

September 4, 1943 — August 21, 2012

Nancy Walton Pringle died on Tuesday, August 21, after a brave struggle with several debilitating long-term illnesses and disabilities. She was 68 years old. Since 2003, she had resided at LifeCare of Charleston, and previously had lived at her home in Sans Souci on the Ashley.

Born in Charleston on September 4, 1943, Nancy was the second child of Ashmead Forrester Pringle, Jr., and Helen Margaret Johansen Pringle. She attended the Little School, Charleston Day School, and Ashley Hall in Charleston, and Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. She received a B.A. from Boston University in Boston, MA, where she majored in Classics. She was a gifted linguist and studied both Latin and Greek. In 1965, she married Richard W. Tillinghast, a poet and professor of English; the marriage ended in divorce. Childless herself, Nancy was devoted to her nieces and nephews, and enjoyed sewing, knitting, and quilting for them.

As a young woman, Nancy modeled for artists Ray Goodbred and Manning Williams. She was a promising student of Stanley Zompakos at the school of the Charleston Ballet Company and in her early 20's was invited to join the company, but did not pursue ballet further after she married and moved to Boston. She was also a talented writer and a longtime member of the Poetry Society of South Carolina. In 2004, she was awarded the Society's Humorous Verse Prize for a short poem that reflects her characteristic wry sense of humor. After returning to Charleston from the Northeast, Nancy was employed for many years by The Charleston Museum. She volunteered at the Charleston County Library and at Crisis Ministries.

Nancy is survived by her devoted siblings, Helen Pringle Gibbs (James Gendron Gibbs, Jr.), Ashmead Forrester Pringle III (Drexel Dennis Pringle), Margaret Pringle Schachte (Hal Sevier Currey), and Phyllis Johansen Pringle (Frank Garate), as well as numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and -nephews. There will be a graveside service at St. Philip's Churchyard on Friday, August 24th at 3:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Poetry Society of South Carolina, PO Box 1090, Charleston, SC 29402. Arrangements by J.HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL.
