Nancy Guthke Jones

Nancy Guthke Jones, 78, of Charleston, SC, beloved wife of Ted W. Jones, Jr., entered into eternal rest on Friday, October 13, 2023 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She and Ted were married for 51 years.

Nancy was born on December 30, 1944 and raised in Charleston, South Carolina, daughter of the late Chief Wilmot E. Guthke and Delora Johnson Guthke. 

She graduated from Rivers High School and Orangeburg Regional Hospital School of Radiologic Technology. She began her career at Saint Francis Hospital. After many years she pursued a specialization in Mammography and began working at the Medical University of South Carolina in the Hollings Mammography Center. Throughout the years she provided excellent patient care and showed compassion for others.

During her childhood and young adult years she was a member of Citadel Square Baptist Church. After marrying Ted and beginning a family they attended Northbridge Baptist and Summerville Baptist Churches. When her daughter left for college, she and Ted moved their membership to Crossroads Community Church and then Riverbluff Church in retirement.

She is survived by her husband Ted Jones, mother Delora Guthke, and her daughter, Julia D. Jones; brother-in-law Ranald “Randy” (Jan) Jones of Jenkintown, PA; sister-in-law Nan Ellen Jones Zyrlis of New London, CT; sister-in-law Chris Jones of Boise, ID; sister-in-law Patricia Guthke of Taylors, SC; cousins Madeline “Mikie” (Coby) Frampton of Mt. Pleasant, SC; Paul Albers of Mt. Pleasant, SC; Sue (Doyle) Neesmith of Lyons, GA; Robert “Bobby” Gilbert of Elloree, SC; James “Jimmy” Gilbert of Shady Shores, Texas; and Ivy Gilbert of Orlando, Florida; Myrtle (David) Billings of Lexington, SC; numerous nieces and nephews in Pennsylvania, Idaho, Connecticut, and Dublin, Ireland. In addition to her father Chief Wilmot E. Guthke, Nancy was preceded in death by her brother Bill Guthke, cousins Victoria “Vickie” Albers and Anne Lane, brother-in-law Laurence “Larry” Jones, aunts Georgeanna (Paul) Albers, June (Robert) Gilbert, Myrtle (Harry) Butt, Elizabeth (Clarence) Hamilton, uncles Robert (Carolyn) Guthke, Winston (Bertha) Guthke, and in-laws Theodore W. Jones, Sr. and Nanette Maher Jones of Connecticut.

Nancy will be remembered for her cheerful smile and generous, giving spirit. She loved to laugh and spend time with her family, friends, and pet poodle. She will also be known for her love of sweet tea and her collection of cute, expensive shoes.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, October 24, 2023, in the J. Henry Stuhr, Northwoods Chapel, 2180 Greenridge Road at 6:00 pm. The family will receive friends beginning one hour prior to the service.
