Nancy Laye Hitchcock

Nancy Laye Hitchcock of James Island, wife of Al Hitchcock for forty years this year, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, May 14, 2022 at her residence.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2022 at 2 o'clock at Harbor View Presbyterian Church, 900 Harbor View Road, James Island, SC 29412. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall.  Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.

Nancy was born in Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte, NC on November 26, 1947, the daughter of the late Vera Neal Laye and Marvin Richard Laye.  She moved with her family to Belmont, NC at a young age and learned how to cook and fish, as both of her parents were textile mill employees and were motivated to teach Nancy how to take care of herself.  The trait continued through life as Nancy became an excellent cook and could give Al a real challenge while fishing.  Nancy was a wife, a friend, a mother, a peacemaker, a beach lover and later in life a committed VA Hospital employee for 23 years, retiring in 2012.  She loved her family and raised the children in the church, on the lake, in the marsh and on the beach.  She could do it all, whether cooking for a campout, running a boat or setting up for the day at the beach.  She never met a stranger and always had a place under her beach umbrella for a chat.  Her Christmas parties were legendary and she loved to entertain.  Nancy never let a worker or contractor visiting the house want for anything,  She was early to rise  to have coffee for the crew or iced tea during the day.  She could make a work day a real treat when working at her house.  Nancy loved the Morris Island Light House, mainly because it was visible from her bedroom and in her backyard.    She also loved the Sullivan's Island Light because it's beam shined into her bedroom and bounced all over the walls for years.  Both are visible from her master bedroom.

Nancy is survived by her husband, Al Hitchcock; their four children, four granddaughters and their family consisting of:  Larry and Amber Miller, Tess and Sydney Miller, Nicholas Miller, Carl and Jennifer Hitchcock, Krista and Josh Fox, Okalani and Halana Fox; Nancy's brother: Adrian Laye and his wife Diane.  She was predeceased by her younger brother: Larry who passed away in 1970.

The family asks that memorials be considered in lieu of flowers, to: Harbor View Presbyterian Church, 900 Harbor View Road, James Island, SC 29412 or to: Lowcountry Community Chaplaincy, P.O. Box 20743, Charleston, SC 29413 or to: Save the Light, Inc., P.O. Box 106 Folly Beach, SC 29439.
