Nancy Ann Fleishman Harlan, 87, of Mount Pleasant, SC passed away peacefully in Bellevue, WA with her daughter near her side on Tuesday, August 8, 2017.
Nancy was born October 21, 1929 in Pittsburgh, PA to Ralph and Wilda Mattern Fleishman of Franklin, PA.
Mrs. Harlan grew up in Oil City and Franklin, PA and her family was active at the St. John's Episcopal Church in Franklin, PA. She attended Walnut Hill Girls School and the Pennsylvania College for Women, now known as Chatham University, in Pittsburgh, PA studying Library Science. Nancy was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Republican Women's Club, volunteered her time at church, soup kitchens and the Charleston public schools. She co-established the gift store 'The Paper Place' in The Charleston City Market. Making a familiar home wherever she moved, Nancy created a life-long circle of friends. She enjoyed playing in the Creekside bridge club, and was known for her sharp wit and quick sense of humor. Nancy liked traveling with Dave and was a champion at gift giving. She loved Christmas and the family being together. She made the best crab cakes this family has ever known. Nancy Harlan cared very deeply for her friends, sincerely loved her children, celebrated and adored her grandchildren.
She will rest next to her beloved husband of 58 years near 'Dave Harlan Way' at Christ Church Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Mrs. Nancy Harlan is survived by her son, David DuShane Harlan Jr., and wife, Defne Veral, their children, Briggs and Maya of Hamden, CT.; her daughter, Deborah Harlan Nelson and husband Bruce Nelson of Seattle,WA and their children, James and Sarah of Brooklyn, NY; her son, James Mattern Harlan and wife, Jennifer Harlan, of Mount Pleasant, SC; and her cousins Foster S. Goldman, Jr. and Harry S. Fleishman III of Pittsburgh, PA. She was preceded in death by her husband, David DuShane Harlan, Sr., sister, Jane Fleishman Thomson and cousin, William "Ted" E. Mattern, Jr.
The funeral service for Mrs. Harlan will be held on Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at the Historic Chapel of Christ Church on Highway 17 North, Mount Pleasant, SC at 11:00 am. A reception will follow. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL.
