Nancy Luke Griffen

October 12, 1930 — December 22, 2015

Nancy Luke Griffen, 85, of Charleston, South Carolina, widow of William W. Griffen, entered into eternal rest the afternoon of Tuesday, December 22, 2015. Her Funeral Service will be held graveside at Magnolia Cemetery on Thursday, December 31, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Downtown Chapel.

Nancy was born October 12, 1930 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, daughter of the late Alexander MacNaughton Luke and the late Frances Graham Luke Rutledge and step-daughter of the late Oliver Middleton Rutledge. She attended Sewickley Academy, graduated from The Ellis School, and matriculated two years at the Carnegie Institute.

In 1953, she married William "Bill" Whitaker Griffen and they moved to Charleston in 1956. They were members of St. Philip's Church, the Country Club of Charleston, Yeamans Hall Club and the Carolina Yacht Club. Nancy was also a member of the Junior League of Charleston. Nancy and Bill returned to Southeastern Pennsylvania in 1974 where Bill practiced law until 1997. Upon Bill's death in 2001, Nancy returned to Charleston to be close to family and friends. Nancy was a resident of Bishop Gadsden for the past 12 years.

She is survived by her three sons, William W. Griffen, Jr. and his wife, Carolyn Fenimore Hall Griffen, Thomas K. Griffen, and J. Penn Griffen and his wife, Louise Small Griffen; one granddaughter, Mary Gray Griffen; two sisters, Jean Luke Wallace and Clementina Rutledge Edwards, both of Charleston.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lowcountry Land Trust, 43 Wentworth Street, Charleston, SC 29401 or to a charity of one's choice.
