Nancy Joy Hefner Goodson passed away of natural causes on September 25, 2024 in Mount Pleasant, SC.
Mrs. Goodson was born in Greer, SC on November 9, 1930, a daughter of the late Roy C. and Leona Lee Hefner. Nancy graduated from Meredith College, Raleigh, NC, with a B.A. in Art. After graduation, she was an art teacher at Wytheville High School, VA, prior to marriage. Mrs. Goodson was a faithful military wife of 69 years to Col. Joseph P. Goodson, USMC (Ret.), and a wonderful loving mother to her children. Nancy enjoyed ballroom dancing with her husband at Marine Corps galas in Washington, DC. Over the years, she enjoyed painting lowcountry landscapes, primarily in watercolors, for family and exhibitions. Nancy also served as a docent/guide at the historic Nathaniel Russell House and Manigault House in downtown Charleston, SC and was also a longtime member of the Charleston Garden Club. Nancy was an active founding member of the Providence Baptist Church, Daniel Island, SC, where she sang in the church choir, as well as, in the choir at First Baptist Church, Charleston, SC, when she was a member there.
Nancy is survived by her son, Jeff Goodson of San Diego, CA; her daughter, Jennifer Goodson (Keith) Lackey of Johns Island, SC; her three grandchildren: Caitlin Goodson (Erik) White of Leesburg, VA, Meredith Lackey (Jonathan) Johnson of Atlanta, GA, and Madison Lackey of Atlanta, GA; her one great-granddaughter, Effie Laine Johnson; and her nephew John Anderson Robinson and his son Sam Robinson of Chattanooga, TN. Mrs. Goodson was predeceased by her sister, Betty Jean Hefner Robinson; her brother, Roy C. Hefner, Jr. (Jesse); her son, Major Brian George Goodson, USMC, and most recently her husband, Col. Joseph P. Goodson, USMC (Ret.).
The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 5, 2024 at 2:00 PM at the J. Henry Stuhr Funeral Home, 1494 Mathis Ferry Rd., Mt. Pleasant, SC, with the funeral service to follow at 4:00 PM. She will be buried on Monday, October 7, 2024, at 2:00 PM at Beaufort National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Nancy's name may be made to Charleston Animal Society, 2455 Remount Rd, North Charleston, SC 29406, or to a charity of your choice.
