Nancy Johnson Cumbie

March 16, 1945 – October 21, 2026

Nancy Johnson Cumbie, 81, of Summerville, South Carolina, beloved wife of Peter Cumbie, departed this life on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

A funeral service giving thanks for Nancy’s life and celebrating the hope of the resurrection through Jesus Christ will be held on Saturday, October 31, at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel at The Village at Summerville, 201 West 9th North Street, Summerville, South Carolina. A reception will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, gifts in memoriam made be made to the Alzheimer's Association (Alzheimer's Association ). Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Northwoods Chapel.

Nancy was a remarkable daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a beloved child of God who knew and trusted in Jesus as her Lord and Savior.

She was born on March 16, 1945, in Corinth, Mississippi, the daughter of the late Rudy Taswell Johnson and Pauline Allred Johnson. She graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Nursing in 1967 and began her long medical career at St. Joseph Hospital in Memphis. Nancy volunteered to serve as a medevac flight nurse in the United States Air Force Reserve to care for wounded soldiers returning home from the Vietnam War. She was a gifted leader and accomplished professional with a passion for caring for people, dedicating much of her career to hospital administration in Charlotte, North Carolina.

While working for Alabama Heart Association in Birmingham, she met the love of her life, Peter who was teaching at UAB. They were happily married for 54 years. As a devoted wife and mother, she was deeply committed to her family. Her trust in Jesus was the foundation of her strength, beauty, and wisdom. As a woman of prayer, she began each day in God’s Word and loved serving in the church. She was a faithful member of Carmel Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC; First Baptist Church of York, SC; and Old Fort Baptist Church in Summerville.

Nancy had a lifelong love of Boston Terriers and she enjoyed gardening, camping, collecting antiques, birdwatching (especially hummingbirds), traveling, and reading. She also loved Elvis, and even when Alzheimer’s had robbed her of so many memories, she could still recall every lyric!

While we grieve her passing, we do not grieve as those who have no hope. We know that by the power of Christ’s resurrection, she is more alive today than we are, free of all sadness and suffering, and one day we will see her again in the presence of our Savior.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her sons, Michael David Cumbie (Langley) of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and William Patrick Cumbie (Sarah) of Summerville, SC; grandchildren, William Patrick Cumbie Jr., Ada McLean Cumbie, Mary Camden Elizabeth Cumbie, Michael David Cumbie Jr., and Bennett Thomas Cumbie; sister, Cynthia Johnson Kington (Joe) of Columbia, TN; and niece and nephew, Laura Catherine Davis and Steven Paul Kington (Rachelle). In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Madeline Jane Cumbie.
