Nana Lee ("Nancy") Frost Watts died peacefully with a friend at her side on June 1, 2012. She was an educator, a raconteur, and servant of Christ who lived joyfully throughout her life.
She was born April 25, 1916 in Baldwyn, Mississippi, the youngest of ten children of William Frost and Lula Parton Frost. She received her education from Grenada College and Mississippi Southern University. After graduation, she taught elementary school in Baldwyn and Tupelo, Mississippi before becoming a reading consultant for Scott Foresman Publishing Company which allowed her to travel throughout the south. In 1952, she married Chaplain John Espy Watts, Jr. and supported his service to the U.S. Navy, its sailors and families through his retirement and until his death in 2002. As the wife of a Navy chaplain, she discharged every duty with a rare combination of grace, fidelity and humor which characterized her entire life.
She was an active member of Second Presbyterian Church in Charleston, serving as deacon, circle leader, moderator or the Women of the Church, and president of the Women of the Church of Charleston Atlantic Presbytery. She is survived by her nieces, Carolyn Moore, of Tupelo, Mississippi, Betty Gayle Hailey of Meridian, Mississippi, Martha Sullivan of Nacogdoches, Texas, nephews, William Frost, of Baldwyn, Mississippi, William Frost Roberts of St. Augustine, Florida, and Fred Sullivan of Woodville, Texas, several great nieces and nephews, and several great-great nieces and nephews. Her friends are countless.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be offered in her memory to Second Presbyterian Church, 342 Meeting Street, Charleston SC 29403 or the Employee Appreciation Fund of the Village at Summerville, 201 W. 9th North Street, Summerville, SC 29483.
The funeral services will be held at Second Presbyterian on Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at 11:00 with a reception to follow in the fellowship hall.
